Process of Methanol Production in Zagros Petrochemical Company Process
  • Zagros process in producing methanol has some featuresthat other methanol producing units in Iran doesn't own for using Auto thermal reactor in producing syntheses gas and recycling hydrogen from perch gas and re-infusion it to the syntheses gas. Methanol is produced by using the following operating units whose functions are listed as below:

  • Unit 100
  • The purpose of this reforming unit to product synthesis gas mainly composed of H2, CO and CO2 which are the key components for the catalytic production of methanol. For this, natural gas, steam and pure oxygen undergo reforming reaction in a nickel based catalyst bed in pre-reformer, steam reformer and auto-thermal reformer, so called combined reforming. Using this scheme is the main difference of the plant with ordinary methanol plants causing significant decrease in plant size to smallest in the country with higher efficiency.

  • Unit 150
  • The main task of this unit is to distribute steam in 3 different levels.
  • High pressure (HP), Medium pressure (MP), and low pressure (LP).
  • BFW required in plant is also prepared and distribute in this unit.

  • Unit 200
  • The purpose of this unit is to procedure crude methanol from synthesis gas in presence of highly selective copper based catalyst by using two water cooled and one gad cooled reactors

  • Unit 250
  • Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is for hydrogen recovery out of purge gas from the methanol synthesis loop with recovery rate of 80% in molecular sieve beds.

  • High purity hydrogen from this unit will be used to achieve stoichiometric composition for methanol synthesis reaction while the remaining off gas will be used in fire heater as fuel.

  • Unit 300
  • This unit is to remove impurities from the crude methanol at minimum loss of product to obtain pure methanol of grade AA

  • Unit 400
  • The produced pure methanol in the distillation unit stored for 12 hours to check the standard specification and then transfer to unit 450 storage tanks and export. Off specification methanol will sent back to distillation for reprocess

  • Unit 450
  • This unit is to store pure methanol in storage tanks with a capacity of 50000tons each.
  • Methanol will be sent to export by tree individual pumps.

  • Unit 500
  • Production of dematerialized water with proper quantity and composition is achieved in this unit. For this, process condensate will be treated as passed through a cation resin bed after which mixed with turbine condensate imported DM water. Final treatment will be fulfilled by passing the blend through a mixed bed ion exchanger.

  • Unit 600
  • This unit is for cooling the closed loop water by using imported sea water as coolant through plate type heat exchangers. And in 2nd site cooling tower system in used for cooling the Recirculated sea water.

  • Unit 700
  • The flare system is provided for the disposal of large volume of combustible gases in safe manner in case of failures and during plant stat up and shutdown.
  • The gases are routed first to the flare knock-out drum to separate possible liquid and condensate.
  • Then the gases sent to flare main flame and the liquid discharge to crude methanol tank in unit 400.

  • Unit 800
  • This unit is producing an emergency power with the diesel generator as an emergency standby to ensure continuity of power supply in the event of loss of normal power supply. The diesel generator will be automatically started.

  • Unit 900
  • This unit is including of fire water net works fill with Mobin imported water equipped with fire hydrant and fire monitoring as well as spray, nozzles, foam, deluge system, CO2, clean agent system and …

  • This unit includes all the plant area for fire protection.
